Is it Dementia?

Many families begin questioning this when they notice the early signs appearing in their loved ones. Dementia is not a specific disease, but an overall group of conditions. Dementia is defined as "a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning."

There may be many signs and symptoms causing you to believe that your loved one is suffering from dementia.

Examples include:

-          Short-term memory loss

-          Frequent moments of forgetfulness

-          Difficulty planning appointments

-          Increased confusion when traveling outside of their normal routines

Dementia can be a progressive disease. This means signs can start off slow and gradually worsen over time. Do not ignore it if you notice your loved one showing signs of dementia. Begin researching what the next steps are and create a care plan for the future. The Alzheimer's Association is an excellent resource to use when questioning a loved one's health or your own. Don't hesitate to ask for help because support is available and extremely important when navigating this difficult path.
