Why Maintaining Flexibility is Important as We Age

At all ages, flexibility and mobility are important to overall health; but it’s even more important as we age. Poor flexibility is often caused by lack of physical activity, causing the joints and tendons to stiffen. This makes regular movements more difficult than normal. Medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, and their side effects can be heightened when combined with poor mobility. The benefits of maintaining flexibility while aging include but are not limited to:

  • Improved ability to perform daily activities

  • Decreased risk of injury

  • Improved balance

  • Overall better musculoskeletal performance

  • Reduced chronic pain

  • Enhanced posture

  • Reduced stress

Improving flexibility through stretching can be a challenge if it has not been a daily practice. Here are a few tips to make it easier:

  • Walking in place for 5 to 10 minutes is a great way to prepare joints and muscles for longer stretching periods

  • Stretching to the point of tension, not pain will decrease the risk of injury

  • Moving slowing and taking deep breaths can lessen recovery time

Flexibility and overall mobility go hand in hand with increasing overall health and independence. Here at Bluegrass Assisted Living, we know how important it is to focus on all aspects of health and wellness. That is why we offer activity programs that promote stretching and strengthening for all levels of care. Please contact us for more information on our programs and services for you or a loved one.
